Why This Is the Perfect Time to Check In With Your Mental Health
When most people think about summer, they picture vacations, sunshine, and time with family. Yet from a mental health perspective, mid-summer often tells a different story.
By July, many families have settled into less structured routines. Bedtimes drift later, meals become less predictable, children spend more time on screens, vacations create financial and emotional stress, and parents find themselves juggling work while trying to keep everyone entertained. Adults often discover they are just as busy as they were during the school year—only in different ways.
At Fortis Behavioral Health, we often see an increase in patients who are struggling with anxiety, irritability, poor sleep, difficulty concentrating, and emotional exhaustion during the middle of summer. Many people are surprised by this because they expect summer to improve their mood. The reality is that changes in routine can significantly affect emotional well-being.
The Brain Thrives on Routine
Our brains function best with consistency. Regular sleep schedules, balanced nutrition, physical activity, and meaningful social interaction help regulate the chemicals responsible for mood, attention, and emotional resilience.
When these routines disappear, symptoms of anxiety, depression, ADHD, and irritability often become more noticeable.
Children may become more impulsive or emotionally reactive. Teenagers may spend more time isolated on electronic devices. Adults frequently experience increased stress from balancing work responsibilities with family demands while trying to create the “perfect” summer.
Five Questions for a Mid-Summer Mental Check-In
Take a moment to honestly ask yourself:
• Am I getting enough consistent, quality sleep?
• Have I been physically active most days this week?
• Am I eating nourishing meals instead of relying on convenience foods?
• Have I spent meaningful, uninterrupted time talking with family or friends?
• Do I feel emotionally healthier than I did three months ago?
If several of these answers are “no,” it may be time to intentionally reset some daily habits before the fall season arrives.
Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference
Improving mental wellness does not require dramatic lifestyle changes. Often, small adjustments have the greatest impact.
Try establishing a consistent bedtime—even during summer break. Spend at least 20–30 minutes outdoors each day. Limit recreational screen time by replacing some device use with family activities, reading, hobbies, or exercise. Make family meals a priority whenever possible, even if only a few nights each week. Schedule time to slow down rather than filling every weekend with activities.
Remember that rest is productive. Our brains need periods of recovery just as much as our bodies do.
Parents: Your Emotional Health Matters Too
Children are remarkably observant. They often take emotional cues from the adults around them. When parents prioritize their own sleep, manage stress in healthy ways, and seek support when needed, children learn valuable lifelong coping skills.
Self-care is not selfish. It is an investment in your family’s emotional well-being.
Looking Ahead
As summer continues, remember that this season does not have to be perfect. Your family does not need a picture-perfect vacation or a packed calendar to build meaningful memories. Sometimes the greatest gift we can give ourselves—and those we love—is simply slowing down, reconnecting, and creating healthy routines that support both body and mind.
From all of us at Fortis Behavioral Health, we wish you a safe, healthy, and restorative remainder of the summer.
